Lexi Thompson will be the eighth female competitor in a PGA Tour tournament
Lexi Thompson during the final round of the Kroger Queen City Championship at the Kenwood Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio, in September. When Lexi Thompson hits the course at the Shriners
Children's Open the following week, she will go down in history as only the
seventh woman to ever play in a PGA Tour event. The American, an 11-time LPGA
Tour champion, obtained an unlimited sponsor exemption to join the 132-player
field at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas starting on October 12
to compete for a $8.4 million prize pool. The 28-year-old is now one of
just eight women to have ever competed in a PGA Tour event, joining Babe
Didrikson Zaharias, Shirley Spork, Annika Sörenstam, Suzey Whaley, Michelle Wie
West, and Brittany Lincicome. Zaharias an Olympic Gold Medal-Winning TrackWith her appearance at the 1935 Cascades Open, Zaharias an
Olympic gold medal-winning track and field athlete turned 10-time LPGA Tour
major champion became the first woman to compete on the PGA Tour. She also
holds the distinction of
being the only woman to have finished in the top 42 at the Tucson Open in
1945 and 33rd at the Phoenix Open in 1935. And Thompson is getting inspiration
from the six women who came before her since she is the first to compete since
her countrywoman Lincicome competed at the 2018 Barbasol Championship in
Kentucky. Spreading the Message that Everything is PossibleGoing after what you want and spreading the message that
everything is possible if you have a goal in mind, whether it be in golf or any
other area of your life, if you set your mind to it, have a good attitude, and
strive towards what you want. Thompson
was a part of the US Solheim Cup squad that almost lost in Spain last month
when Europe staged a stunning comeback to tie the game at 14-14 and keep the
trophy. LPGA Tour's Arkansas ChampionshipThe world No. 25 played well at the LPGA Tour's Arkansas
Championship, finishing Sunday in a tie for eighth place, but she hasn't
claimed a victory on the
tour since taking home the ShopRite LPGA Classic trophy in June 2019. She
has won one significant championship, the 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship, which
is currently known as the Chevron Championship. Disability does not DiscriminateAs we all know, disability does not discriminate, and The
Shriners Children's supports all children with impairments, regardless of
gender, Thompson said in an Instagram
post on Wednesday. "I'm hoping that my ability to compete against the
guys at The Shriners Children Open next week will inspire young ladies to
pursue their aspirations no
matter how challenging they may appear. "I'm so appreciative to the
Shriners for this opportunity to spend the week with these inspiring kids, and
I can't wait to visit the city of Las Vegas!" Joo-hyung of South KoreaKim "Tom" Joo-hyung of South Korea won the
competition the year before. With a three-shot victory and no bogeys, the
then-20-year-old made history
by becoming the youngest golfer to win twice on the PGA Tour before turning 21.
