The Rapidly Growing Popularity of Private Universities in Germany
Private universities in Germany are outmaneuvering their public counterparts in attracting an ever-dwindling pool of domestic students. Last year saw a twelvefold increase in the number of
students in German private universities compared to twenty years ago. State or
public universities in Germany have always been popular with domestic and
foreign students, but this trend has changed. Federal German Statistical OfficePrivate universities are becoming increasingly popular in
Germany. This was revealed in a recent report by the Federal German Statistical
Office. According to this report, during 2021-22, one out of every ten students
enrolled in some
private university in the winter semester. The total number of students
studying at private universities was 342,600, almost 12 times more than 20
years ago. Then the number of students studying in private universities was
only 29,400. Applied SciencesIn the same period, all universities' total number of students increased by 57.5 percent from 1.9 million to 2.9
million. As a result, the proportion of students studying in private
universities has increased almost tenfold. Private universities of applied
sciences are the most popular, with 90.5% of students enrolled. Public UniversitiesThe number of private universities in Germany has been
increasing over the years. In the last 20 years, the number of private
universities has increased
from 49 in the winter semester of 2001-02 to 114 in the winter semester of
2021-22. The student-faculty ratio in private universities is less favorable
than in public universities. Academic Research StudentFor example, during the winter semester of 2021-22 in
private universities, a teacher supervised an average of 36.4 academic
or research students, while in public universities the number of students
supervised by a teacher was only 14.6. Private UniversitiesDuring 2021-22, most students in private
universities of applied sciences majored in law, economics, and social
sciences. Engineering and humanities or health sciences followed this. Germany's
