U.S. Commerce Secretary
Gina Raimondo has spoken with Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao about
concerns about sanctions on U.S. businesses in China, including Intel and
Micron. The two countries agreed to start a dialogue with the Export
Control Enforcement Information Cell.
U.S. businesses
According to the report
of the Reuters news agency, the meeting with Gina Raimondo and the head of the
Department of Commerce's administrative affairs lasted for two hours. After
that lunch was arranged. "We are doing our best to deliver," Gina Raimondo said in a meeting
with business executives, looking to address the concerns of all U.S.
businesses that are having trouble doing business in China. Assuring the
businessmen, he said that we will have a formal discussion in this regard.
US Commerce Department
Gina Raimondo told
reporters that she had discussed with her Chinese counterpart concerns about
China's ban on purchases of Micron Technology memory
chips. During the talks, the two countries also agreed to a new formal working
group on trade issues to exchange information on the implementation of export
controls, the US Commerce Department said.
Export Control Information Exchange
Gina Raimondo said that
the launch of the exchange will provide a platform to reduce misunderstandings about
US national security policies, clarifying that we do not compromise or
negotiate on national security issues. Gina Raimondo added that the first
in-person meeting of the 'Export Control Information Exchange' will be held by US
Assistant Secretary for Export Enforcement Matthew Axelrod today in China
by the Ministry of Commerce. The Export Control Information Exchange will meet
at least on an annual basis, a senior official said, stressing that it is not a
policy dialogue but an effort for both sides to find answers to the question of
whether export controls are effective. As for how things work, we're not
talking about what our policies will be.
Transparent export control implementation strategy
She further said that the
US is committed to a transparent export control implementation strategy with
us. The first meeting will be
held in Beijing on August 30. He said that we do not want to waste time.
China has criticized U.S. efforts to block
China's access to advanced semiconductors through export controls, but Gina
Raimondo has said she doesn't want to debate that.
U.S. investment in sensitive
technologies in China
The White House this
month began restricting some U.S. investment in sensitive technologies in China
and plans to soon finalize export restrictions on advanced
semiconductors it acquired in October. Earlier this year, Gina Raimondo said
that more than 200 Chinese companies had been added to the US export control
list and that she did not hesitate to use force as necessary.
